Executive function development support for youth

Executive function (EF) is shorthand for a collection of cognitive abilities essential for managing everyday tasks and adapting to new situations. Children learn EF skills over time, developing crucial components like working memory, problem solving, and cognitive flexibility. These skills can be particularly challenging for neurodivergent children and families.

Challenge

Over the course of 10 weeks, I was tasked with helping our team conduct a systematic application analysis of current technology that aids executive function development in youth.

Results

After conducting a systemic review of 39 applications, we created a research poster to present our findings.

Our research was presented at the CERES Fall Intensive. CERES, which stands for Connecting the EdTech Research EcoSystem, focuses on advancing technology to improve outcomes for today's youth.

Conclusion

After contributing to this project, I believe that future design work in the realm of executive function development should continue to place importance on neurodiverse voices. To better support children with executive dysfunction, it is most beneficial to take a multidisciplinary approach that involves the relevant stakeholders.
